Subscriber Key

Task 1: Export and Analyze All Subscribers List

  • Identify the count of Active, Unsubscribed, Bounced, and Held subscribers

Task 2: Create and Import Subscribers with Custom Subscriber Keys

Map Subscriber Key to Customer ID & Email Address to Email Address

  • Create an import file with:

    • Subscriber Key (Use a unique Customer ID instead of email)

    • Email Address

    • Status (Set all to Active)

  • Import the file into All Subscribers

  • Check if SFMC correctly maps the Subscriber Key instead of the email

Task 3: Test Subscriber Status Changes

  • Manually unsubscribe a subscriber from All Subscribers

  • Try sending an email to that subscriber and verify if SFMC blocks the send

  • Change the status back to Active and retry the send

Unsubscribe a subscriber from All Subscribers

Task 6: Explain Subscriber Key vs. Subscriber ID

Write a short explanation (under 100 words) comparing the two

  • Subscriber Key is a user-defined unique identifier. You (the marketer) choose this value (e.g., a CRM ID or email) to uniquely identify subscribers across different channels and data extensions.
  • Subscriber ID is a system-generated unique identifier. It is a numeric ID created automatically by Marketing Cloud for internal database tracking and is typically only visible via APIs or system data views.

Prepare a real-world scenario where using a custom Subscriber Key is beneficial
A common real-world scenario for using a custom Subscriber Key (instead of an email address) is managing household accounts where multiple family members share a single email address.
Scenario: The Family Loyalty Program
  • The Problem: A family (e.g., the Cruz family) joins a retail loyalty program using one shared email address (cruz-family@email.com). If the brand uses "Email Address" as the unique identifier, the system can only store one set of data (like birthdates or preferences) for that entire family.
  • The Custom Solution: By setting a custom Subscriber Key based on a unique Loyalty Card ID for each person, the brand can:
    • Differentiate Members: Store separate birthdays for twin daughters, Jill and Lisa, even though they share an inbox.
    • Send Targeted Content: Trigger two separate "Happy Birthday" emails with unique coupons to the same email address on the same day.
    • Maintain History: Track individual purchase histories and engagement for each family member .

    Task 7: Troubleshooting Exercise

    • A subscriber reports not receiving emails, but they exist in a Data Extension

When a subscriber exists in a Data Extension (DE) but is not receiving emails, the issue usually lies in their status
    1. Check "All Subscribers" Status: Search for the Subscriber Key in the All Subscribers list. If their status is UnsubscribedHeld, or Bounced, Marketing Cloud will automatically block the send.
    2. Verify DE Relationship: Ensure the Data Extension is marked as Sendable and that the correct field (the Subscriber Key) is mapped to Subscribers on Subscriber Key in the "Subscriber Relationship" settings.
